5 Reasons Why You Should Have Written Goals

Without written goals and a clear plan of action you'll never do what you are potentially capable of. The problem is many people do not know what goals are, or their vital importance as an ingredient toward achieving what they want. It is worth noting that you have to plan and prepare so that when you recognize the opportunity that is consistent with what you want, you are ready for it. With no goal how will you recognize it?

Here are 5 reasons why you should develop the habit of putting ALL your goals down on paper in a way that is clear, easy to follow, and provides all the information you need at a glance:

1. Writing your goals down on paper crystallizes thought and thought motivates action. You’ll realize that the moment you start to take time to think about the reasons why you want to achieve your goal, the obstacles you’ll have to surmount, how to surmount them, and to develop a plan of action, you’ll begin to build the necessary momentum for the attainment of your goals.

2. Writing your goals down on paper creates a psychological commitment and this can help you to become more disciplined with yourself. I must admit that I learned to be disciplined with myself after I started writing my goals down on paper. Prior to that, I was easily distracted by unnecessary and unimportant things. Having written goals helps to keep you focused on what you want regardless of the distractions around you.

3. Moreover, writing your goals down serves as a measure to review your progress. It can be challenging to continue working on your goals with the right attitude when you don’t see the progress you’ve made with your goals simply because you don’t keep records. On the other hand, when you see how far you’ve come (from the number of steps you’ve already taken) you should be encouraged to continue pressing forward.

4. Writing your goals down on paper provides a guide for you to stay on course. It allows you also to set your priorities, set deadlines and get the balance right. Furthermore, your written plan with its schedule of activities will tell you what you need to do in order to achieve what you want.

5. Writing them down stimulates your imagination in the form of visualizing the outcomes you want. This in turns increases your creativity to assist you in the successful completion of what you decide.

The Bottom line

Your goals must be written down if you want to maximize your potential, manage your time properly, become more disciplined with yourself, and more focused.

  1. Gerard, you are right on the money! There's something about writing down goals and seeing them in your own handwriting that makes them permanent in a way just thinking about them can't.

Sometimes I'll actually create a "goal card" and keep it in my wallet, so I can look at it whenever I think about them, or am faced with a decision that tests them.

Great post. Bookmarked and shared :)
