Let Your Heart Guide You

You have to follow the desires of your heart; not what you should do, or not do as delineated by others. The choices you make must be your own. Of course, you should weigh up any consequences your actions may have on others and often it is wise to go and seek the advice and opinion of others. In the end, the choice is yours because no one is qualified to make your decisions, has your exact personality, or has to bear the full consequences of your choice as you must. That is why you must learn to have faith in your own inner guidance system and to develop your power of choice and decision-making by using this.

Moreover, if you go down a path you haven't consciously chosen you won't achieve your full potential. I spoke with a friend recently who is a law student. After chatting for a while he began to tell me that he wasn't really interested in becoming a lawyer, but his family wants him to become one. He told me he was making plans to change his career in order to become what he really wants—an administrator.

Looking back in my life, I remember when my family wanted me to become a medical doctor. However, it didn't work because I believe God had something different in store for my future. The scripture says that man makes his plans in his heart, but God directs his steps.(Proverbs 16:9) Although they may be disappointed that I didn't become what they had in mind, I know God is pleased with me— I know I have his approval. The scripture says we should please God, not men.

In the same way, make a decision today to follow the desires of your heart and learn to have faith in your own inner guidance system. When you do this you'll begin to lead a more fulfilled life knowing that you are becoming the person you want to be.
