Develop a Habit of Happiness
Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be. There's no doubt about it; happiness is a way of living, a choice, and you have the power within you to choose how you think, feel, and act at any given moment. The problem is that too many people live under the misconception that they have to earn it, or that their happiness depends on external circumstances, or that others are responsible for making them happy or unhappy. Realize that an unhappy person programs his/her mind to "make me unhappy" and you know what? Your mind will obey any command you give it. The subconscious mind has no sense of humor, whatever you sow you shall reap!
In addition, many people believe that happiness is dependent on things and people external to themselves, yet when we look for happiness outside of ourselves we make an unhappy mistake. We feel powerless to attain happiness and devote our lives to the pursuit of things that we know won't necessarily bring happiness.
To solve this problem, don't save up for happiness as so many do. They live under the misconception that you have to earn it. How and when? Why are you waiting for your circumstances to change, or for your goals to be accomplished before you become happy? You are happiness. Happiness is like opportunity, it's always there if you look for it and seize it in the same way.
It is worth noting that people who are happy constantly exhibit a positive attitude, they embrace each day for what it truly is; a beautiful gift from God. They love life, and consistently squeeze as much fun and fulfillment as they can from each and every day. Their optimistic outlook keeps them charging ahead, setting the table for their ongoing success.
In addition, your capacity for happiness can be increased simply by sharing it with others. Giving to others can be the most rewarding experience of your life, even if you start with giving your smile freely. As an exercise, practice smiling in front of the mirror every day for at least 30 seconds. After the initial embarrassed feeling you'll feel great about yourself.
“He who enjoys doing and enjoys what he has done is happy.”
-- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Furthermore, in order to be truly happy, you must first make absolutely sure that you’re following your heart. And that means doing whatever it is that brings out your very best. If you’re not presently loving the life you live and living the life that you love, it’s a sure fire bet that you are not passionately pursuing your dreams. And pursue them you must if a lifetime of happiness is your goal.
Let's face it, when you enjoy what you’re doing, you can barely wait to jump out of bed in the morning. By the same token, when you're doing those things you have to do instead of the things you love to do, getting out of bed can become a monumental task for sure. By staying fired up and ready to rumble, each morning brings with it a new opportunity to do your best and a golden chance to make a difference. And it is seizing that chance to live life on your terms that can usher untold happiness into your life.
“True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done, the zest of creating things new.”
-- Antoine De Saint-Exupery
To find out what you’re passionate about, ask yourself some questions and you’ll discover that you have the answers within. There is no point in work until it absorbs you like an absorbing game. If it doesn’t absorb you, if it is never any fun, don't do it.
To find out what you're passionate about answer the following questions:
1. What really absorbs you?
2. What activity do you sometimes do that absorbs you so much that you lose track of time?
3. What holds your interest? What holds your interest so much that your mind doesn’t wander, that you are able to concentrate on it, almost without conscious effort?
4. What holds your attention or commands your attention, pulling you away from other subjects?
5. What interests you and holds your attention as you are driving and listening to the radio?
6. What books catch your eye?
7. What snippets of information or conversation spark your interest?
Put simply, what you love to do is a sign from your inner guidance of what you are to do. While goals are chosen, a purpose is discovered. The true purpose of life is to find a mission and fulfil it. To find something that absorbs us, becomes a magnificent obsession, a cause for living every day of our life, a cause that creates a sense of fulfillment satisfaction and happiness.
The Bottom Line
Happiness doesn’t depend on your circumstances; it depends on your will. Remember that unhappiness is as a result of old patterns of thinking and feeling. With your new programming and affirmation: "I feel happy" you will find a new impetus to make you the better you that you can be.
