Top 5 Reasons Why You Haven’t Got What You Want

We have the power within to choose what we want to do, have, achieve, and become in every area of our lives. Too often, however, when some people decide what they want, they never get it. What are the reasons? Everyone may come up with some reasons for the non-attainment of their goals, but here are the top five reasons:

1. No Written Goals

Many people don’t keep a goal journal and in fact only about 3% of adults have written goals. Since their goals are not written down, they cannot create the psychological commitment that is possible only when goals are written down. As a result, they cannot set their priorities straight, set deadlines, and maintain balance in their lives. Furthermore, without written goals they lack a guide to help them stay on course.

2. No Clear and Specific Goals

The enthusiasm within you which will be kindled will burn brightly with a specific goal. The problem is that too many people set goals that are not clearly and specifically defined. Therefore, they end up not getting what they really want. To solve this problem, try to be as specific as possible (by indicating things like the deadline, color, size, and so on) with all the goals you set for yourself. You won’t burn with desire to get what you want until you specifically define what it is, and focus on it.

3. No Reward

You should have a reward system for all your small, medium, and long-term goals. It doesn’t matter how small the reward is, as long as there is a reward. However, when people set goals they tend to move toward it with gritted teeth and determination. Yes, of course determination is important, particularly in your resolve to achieve what you have set out, but a rigid type of determination can be self-defeating. To solve this problem, endeavor to make the journey toward your desired goal fun by rewarding yourself for every step you take.

4. No Reasons Why

At times people aren’t short of goals but they are short of the reasons why they want to achieve them. If you don’t constantly remind yourself why you want to get what you want, your desire and determination to get it can begin to falter. Besides, you may become less excited about your goals over time. To solve this problem, list all the reasons why you want to get what you want (in your goal journal) for each goal you set in every area of your life, and then ensure that you recite them every day.

5. No Action

No matter how good your goal or your plan is, and no matter how much you visualize it, if you are not prepared to take positive action toward your objective, then you are just deceiving yourself. Your written plan with its schedule of priorities will tell you what you need to do so you don’t cheat yourself, do it! If you have to learn a new skill, learn it. If it means doing something you’ve never done before, do it. Do whatever it takes! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
