How to Become a Christian
To become a Christian, the following happens:
1. You hear or read the Word of God.
2. Through the working of the holy spirit, the word reveals the following to you:
a) That you are a sinner. The scripture says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
b) That the wages sin pays is death; that is separation from God and everlasting suffering in the lake of fire. (See Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:12-15)
c) That by your own efforts you cannot save yourself from the power of sin and the lake of fire. (Romans 7:14-24)
d) That there is someone who can save you from going to the lake of fire; and He is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who took your place and died on the cross, to save you from sin. (1 Timothy 2:5-6; 1 Peter 3:18)
e) That you can choose to repent and receive Jesus in your life, who forgives and gives eternal life, or choose to continue in sin and end up in the lake of fire. (John 3:16)
3. Your response to the word you heard or read
a) You decide in your heart to repent. That is you decide in your heart to turn away from all sin. (Luke 15:17-21; Acts 2:36-41)
b) You believe and accept the facts about Jesus, and you put your faith in Him, as the only one who died for you and who can save you. ( Act 8:35-39, Act 16:26-34; Romans 10:9-10)
c) With sincerity in your heart, open your mouth and pray, inviting Jesus to come into your life as Lord and Savior, to forgive all your sins and empower you to live in a way that is pleasing and honoring to God. (Luke 15-21; Luke 18:13)
4. Results of your response
a) All your sins are forgiven; your name is written in the Book of Life; you have become a child of God; you have the Spirit of Christ; God can now hear and answer your prayers. (Isaiah 43:25; 1 John 1:9; John 1:12; 1 John 5:11-13)
b) Satan becomes very angry and uses ungodly people (non-Christian friends and relatives, church-goers, etc) to persecute you. They trouble you, causing physical and moral pain, in order to force you to fall back to your old sinful ways and continue the journey to Hell. So, don’t be surprised when persecution comes. (2 Timothy 3:12; Matthew 5:10-12, 10:22)
