8 Ways to Improve Your Attitude

Attitudes are nothing more than habits of thought and habits can be acquired. They can be formed and learned. It is significant to note here that you are individually the sum-total of the thinking habits you have acquired up to this point in your life. There is obviously no way to avoid your earlier environmental influence. You can, however, definitely influence your current environment and thoughts. You can consciously and constructively change your habits and attitudes for the better.

Here are 8 ways to improve your attitude today:

1. Imagine positive outcomes

The scripture says that we should meditate on things that are of good report. (Philippians 4:8) The problem is that anyone can unconsciously slip into the habit of negative thinking, and this fills the mind with worry and fear. The good news is you can replace a negative thought by a positive one using visualization. Bear in mind that attitudes are habits of thought so keep your mind on what you want, not on what you don't want.

2. Believe you can change your attitude

Be determined consciously and constructively to change your bad habits and attitudes through practice. You can do this because you have the power to think whatever you choose to allow in your head. If you can control your thoughts you can determine your feelings and you can choose how to respond or act in a particular situation. This means you can no longer blame circumstances for any situation you find yourself in.

3. Practice positive attitudes

At home and at work, practice positive attitudes. Look for reasons why you can do something, not reasons why you can’t. Also, never say, "I can't do it because I don't know how to do it”. Start doing it and you'll learn how to do it in the doing of it. Put your intelligence into creative use. Use it to find reasons why you can do something not reasons to prove that you can’t do it. When you improve your attitudes you ought to automatically improve your capabilities.

4. Get rid of destructive emotions

Negative emotions such as anger, bitterness, resentment, jealousy, hatred, fear, doubt, and worry are destructive emotions. They will hurt you, not others. Forgive anyone who has ever hurt you in the past.

5. Apply principles of self-improvement

As you start applying principles of self-improvement, you will inevitably begin to evolve in a direction that is beneficial and harmonious to you. You may start to notice almost imperceptible changes in your attitude and behavior or major ones, but you will feel at some time a “natural” resistance to the changes you are experiencing.

In the absence of new instructions being constantly repeated and internalized it will continue to give “new ways a try” and then revert back to its consistent path. That’s why it is extremely important that you take time every day to repeat your affirmations and conditioning statements.

6. Put a smile on your face

Just smiling can do wonders for your attitude. Practice smiling in front of a mirror for at least 30 seconds every day. After you've overcome the initial embarrassed feeling you'll feel good about yourself. Being happy now means making you laugh more often, not a chuckle or grin but a really big belly laugh. Laughter is the best medicine as the old saying goes.

7. Accept your mistakes and failures

Mistakes mark progress. We can either accept a mistake as failure or as a lesson in progress, as a challenge or a chastisement. The attitude you develop gradually reconditions you to say: "I can do it" or "It can't be done", before you even try. It is your attitude toward adversity that will either strengthen or weaken you.

8. Avoid doom and gloom

Ever day we expose ourselves to a diet of pain, horror, doom, and gloom. The average person witnesses three murders a night in the comfort of his home while watching television. That's over 100 deaths per year. Do you think this will have an effect on your attitude and thinking? Of course, it would. The mind is what the mind is fed. Our mind food determines our habits, attitudes, and our personalities. In addition, avoid spending time with negative people because they’ll “infect” you with their negativity.
