10 Tips on How to Put Your Goals on Paper
It is imperative that you put all your goals down on paper in a way that is clear, easy to follow, and provides all the information you need at a glance in order to provide a guide for you to stay on course. Here are some goal-setting guidelines to help you:
1. Decide what you want
- Make a list of all the things you want to do, have, achieve, buy, and become in every area of your life: business, financial, career, physical, health, family, social, personal, fun, adventure, mental, emotional, spiritual, and ethical. Also, be as clear and specific as possible with each goal (specify the size, color, deadline, and so on).
- Put the goal down in a goal journal (this could be spiral-bound A4 papers or something better) and state it in a way that is challenging and exciting. If you are not excited (you know when you’re excited), then you’ve stated your goal incorrectly.
There are three types of goals: short, medium, and long-term goals.
- Short-term goals are from 1 day to 3 months
- Medium-term goals from 3 months to a year
- Long-term from a year and beyond.
Balance is very important, and one of the key ways to create a balanced life is to set challenging goals in every area of your life. Also, you’ll realize that you tend to set many goals for an area of your life more than another, probably because that area is more important to you right now. In any case, ensure that you maintain balance.
4. Prioritize your work
You will realize that you have more goals in one area of life than others so you have to decide the level of priority for each goal you set. It can be either:
- Low
- Normal
- High
- Very high
This is a very important step and should not be overlooked. The “reasons why” are in reality a list of the benefits you’ll gain. Moreover, these benefits will help you develop a strong desire to get what you want, and reading them out loud every day will provide the motivation you need to take a step toward the completion of what you want.
6. Identify the obstacles on your path
Before you develop a plan of action to take you from where you are to where you want to be, it is necessary that you list all the things preventing you from achieving your goal. Never allow yourself to be intimidated by the number and/or size of the obstacles on your path. Realize that you are not alone in your mission. When you do what you can do, God will do what you cannot do.
In addition, instead of describing the problem you have to…
7. Think about the solution to the problem
Realize that everyone who has ever achieved what the set out to do had to surmount their own obstacles. Also, see obstacles as stepping-stones; they instruct rather than obstruct.
Furthermore, have faith in God, believe that He can make a way where there seems to be no way. Remember for every obstacle there is a miracle.
8. Develop a clear plan of action
For every success a diligent planning is necessary. You need a plan that shows you the steps you’ll need to take to get from where you are to where you want to be in every area of your life. Each step should have a mini-deadline for its completion to keep you alert. In addition, find the books, tapes, manuals, and other resources that will help you develop a clear plan of action.
9. Describe each goal in its completed state
It is crucial to your success that you describe your goal in its completed state every day. You can do this in many ways:
- Start with the words “I am” or using the second person “You are” for example, “I am courageous and strong in the face of adversity,” “I am becoming more patient with my goals every day,” “You are prosperous,” “You are a generous person,” and so on.
- Imagine yourself sharing your success story with adoring fans. Describe the challenges you faced and the state of mind that enabled you to surmount them.
You have to accomplish what you want mentally first before you accomplish it physically. Furthermore, what we vividly imagine, ardently desire, and enthusiastically act upon must eventually come to pass. You have to begin with the end in mind that's why you should close your eyes and see the end result. Practice doing, having, buying, achieving, and becoming what you want, in every area of your life, in your mind first. You have your own practice arena in your mind so use it to your advantage.
